Separation Anxiety

What is separation anxiety?

Separation anxiety is a normal aspect of child development which takes place between 8 and 12 months. Separation anxiety typically resolves by 24 months old but can appear in older children, teenagers and even adults. When this occurs, it is termed separation anxiety disorder and results in powerful feelings of anxiety when separated from a particular individual or even pet.

What causes separation anxiety?

Separation anxiety in children is caused by the lack of understanding that when a care giver leaves, they will return. In older individuals, separation anxiety can be caused by:

  • A loved one moving away
  • An underlying mental health condition
