What is self-harm?

Self-harm is when somebody intentionally damages or injures their body and can be any behaviour designed to hurt yourself. It is usually a way of coping with or expressing overwhelming emotional distress. More than half of people who die from suicide have a history of self-harm. More often the intention is to self-punish, relieve unbearable tension, or express intense distress. Sometimes it can be a combination of all three. Self harm can also be a cry for help.
